The Emergence of Synthetic Reasoning – Manuel DeLanda

In this article DeLanda explores history of emergence in science and how it might be studied and understood.

DeLanda describes emergence as long understood as that which is “objectively irreducible”, early examples include; “life”, “mind”, and “deity”.

Rather than see emergence as unknowable this article encourages researchers to use a method of specifying the “structure of the space of possibilities that is defined by an entity’s tendencies and capacities.”

Critical terms to understand for this way of thinking are defined:

assemblage product of a historical process, the initial process, and following processes among neighboring parts that maintain the system

individual singularity individual character can be defined at many scales, an assemblage of parts can be unique. This is a result of tendencies interacting over time, removing one character and it’s tendencies may destroy the whole’s identity.

tendencies&capacities DeLanda describes tendencies as the controls or skills of the assemblage, and the capacities, from what I understand attempt to factor in interaction with environments over time, this way the space of possibilities can begin to be described.

boundaries The territory each assemblage defines for itself can fluctuate between being clear and fixed or fuzzy and ambiguous.

=power of speech code cultural behavior
